Ö1 Jazzstipendium 2024: Win a full scholarship and a CD production
Ö1 is awarding the "Ö1 Jazzstipendium" for the seventh time. The winner receives a scholarschip in the Bachelor or Master program in Music at the JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music, Vienna and a CD Production with Quinton Records.
The scholarship is a part of the "Ö1 Talentebörse," which awards an outstanding young jazz artist and provides a two-year study program at the Jam Music Lab Private University. Read more about the contest in Andreas Felber's article here.
Musicians up to the age of 28 are eligible to apply. The detailed creteria are in the passage below. In addition to the scholarship, the awardee also has the opportunity for a CD production in collaboration with Quinton Records.
Submission procedure, audition
Interested participants should apply by March 31, 2024 by e-mail to
oe1-stipendium@jammusiclab.com with the following documents:
- Description or documentation of previous musical experiences and projects and of previous musical education. A curriculum vitae and a photo of the artist (min. 300 dpi)
- an uncut video with 2-3 meaningful musical performances of the applicant (preferably recording of a live performance; no professional image quality required, cell phone recording sufficient)
- Final round (live performance of the best applicants): On April 19th 2024 at ORF Funkhaus, Vienna.The jury will select up to 5 finalists from the submissions and invite them to the audition.
- The scholarship certificate will be presented to the winner on April 30, 2024 in Salzburg
Award Criteria
- The scholarship will be awarded to an Austrian citizen or non-Austrians residing in Austria
- Admitted are instrumentalists and vocalists with a maximum age of 28 years (at the time of submission), who have the formal requirements to begin studies
- The scholarship holder possesses a spirit of innovation and originality in his or her demanding musical language. As an interpreter, he/she shows openness and the ability for outstanding musical communication and interaction. His or her music expresses the exciting interrelations between the style-defining tradition and the composed and improvised forms of contemporary jazz
- The scholarship holder is available for two performances at Ö1 events (by arrangement with Ö1) schedule
Austria is a hotspot of European jazz. Great artists as Joe Zawinul, the Vienna Art Orchestra Vera Auer, Adriane Muttenthaler and many more have brought this genre from Austria to the world. Ö1 has been supporting young and promising generation of Austrian jazz musicians to gain more visibility and audibility. The scholarship is intended to give one of their representatives an important impulse or start od an international career.
The first recipient, on April 30, 2018, during Ö1 Jazz Day, was the Carinthian saxophonist Robert Unterköfler, who was presented with the scholarship certificate. Since then, he has gained recognition, notably through the release of the quintet CD "Rote Welt" and his involvement as a member of Christian Muthspiel's Orjazztra Vienna. In 2019, the Upper Austrian drummer Lukas Aichinger succeeded, and he has since released his debut CD, "Thinker Try To Dance," with the sextet AHL6. In 2020, the scholarship went to Constanze Friedel, a violinist originally from Ilmenau in German Thuringia, who has been living in Vienna since 2014. She convinced the jury, which included guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, US producer Jeff Levenson, and Ö1 Jazz editorial director Andreas Felber.
In 2021, Madeleine Kaindl won the Jazz Scholarship. The saxophonist and singer released her debut project "Madeleine & the Hildeguards: Knef re:loaded" in early 2022. The 2022 scholarship was awarded to the 21-year-old pianist Alan Bartuš, who reached the semifinals of the globally renowned Herbie Hancock International Piano Competition in 2023. The latest scholarship in 2023 was awarded to Andreas Varady, an exceptional guitarist who was discovered by star producer Quincy Jones as a teenager and is currently studying at JAM MUSIC LAB in Vienna.
